The Key

The mark on a page
The ink on the sheet
The paint on a canvas
A pixel on the background
black on white.

There is something
in this contrast,
this void, the mark
both creates and fills
by existing.

This creates tension
inside the Artist’s mind.
That is the excitement!

Can you hear the spring winding?

The marks flow
out from a tiny point

The void lessens
Excitement grows
And then--!!


Can you feel it?
The key is turning,
winding the spring again;
gears clock into place.

The brow sweats
the glaciers melt
the rivers spawn and run
the stream flows down
to the bottleneck and then
the mark meets her
brethren in the sea.

Can you see it?
The ocean of marks
floating in the void?
